This was an automated vapor cell test station. The client was building custom optically pump magnetometers, and part of the process required characterizing components received from a fab house.
I fully designed the entire system, including the thermal budget calculations, thermal simulations, heater selection, PID controller, full system wiring, positioning look-up tables, and programming the data collection UI in python (PyQtGraph & PyQt).
Considerations were made for heat-up time, cycle time, platen & carrier mass, expected temperature rise.
The startup power was calculated, along with conduction heat losses as well as combined convection & radiation.
An optical train was setup over the vapor cell carrier, with a detector on the underside of the carrier. The wavelength was swept via a general purpose ZYNQ controller with customer provided control firmware.
